They're a great protective style and I've been doing them all year
I actually didn't intend on doing massive braids the first time I just wanted medium sized braids but the hairdresser made them twice the size I wanted.

I ended up loving them and kept doing them all year. It takes less time and they're much lighter than medium or small twists. They're really convenient and the fact that I don't have to spend more than 3 hours at the salon are a few of the reasons I love box braids.
It took me a while to figure out how to take care of my hair while it's in braids because there's so much information on the internet and that was a bit confusing for me. I had so many things in my spray bottle at different points. There was a time I actually had 4 different oils in it (castor oil, olive oil, sweet almond oil and tea tree oil) but that caused too much product build up because i was doing too much.
My cousin then suggested I try glycerin and I eventually tried a mixture of water, glycerine and some castor oil in my spray bottle.
Glycerine is a humectant which means that it absorbs moisture from its surroundings and chemically binds water to them. This means that when mixed with water in a spray bottle it absorbs and moisturises hair and also absorbs moisture from its surroundings and puts this back into hair when spritzed . However, even though a lot of people love it, some people hate it because their hair doesn't respond well to it especially during the dry season.
I mixed water, glycerine and castor oil in my spray bottle and I spritzed it on my scalp and on my braids up to the part where my hair stops every 3 days so that I wouldn't get any product build up. My hair loved it and felt much more moisturised when I took out my braids. I also had much less breakage when I took my braids out as it wasn't too dry.
I also usually co-wash (condition wash) my hair 2 weeks after getting my braids done with v05 conditioner and this helps keep my scalp clean without stripping it of too much moisture.
